Cassie is in the midst of a marvelous dream about Christopher when she wakes with a start. She sees her mother slumped on a couch in the ICU lounge, and then she feels sick. Really sick. Throwing up sick. She jumps to her feet and urgently searches for a toilet. Rushing into a stall, she sways over the bowl, but the nausea passes. She returns to the lounge. Quietly she removes the calendar from her purse and checks the date when her last period started. Then she feels even worse. But it’s impossible. She’s wearing an IUD!

Liz asks, “What time is it?”

Cassie glances at her watch. “It’s 6:00 a.m., Mom. I’ll go see what I can find out.”

At the nursing station in the center of the ICU, a woman is writing on a chart. Ten screens mounted on the wall behind her show recumbent patients. Monitors blip.

“How’s my father, Paul Lyman?”

“He had a quiet night. The doctor will come talk to you after he’s taken a look at him. Dr. Barnes should be here by 7.”
